Hersham residents cool down at beer festival
Jul 13 2010 By Vicki Eltis
THE beers and ciders may have been crisp cold but inside the scout hut it was scorching hot on Friday when visitors enjoyed the third annual Hersham Beer Festival.
The ever-popular event saw almost 1,000 people through the doors over the two day event held at the 1st Hersham Scout hut, in Burwood Road.
The festival organised by 1st Hersham Scouts, raises money to be able to send scouts on trips. This summer 20 boys, aged 10 to 14, will get to go on a trip to New Zealand where they’ll undertake activities including mountaineering, sailing and kayaking.
Organiser, Ed Grimsey, whose favourite tipple was organic lager, Hepworth Gold, said: “It was a really good event. We had lots of people come through the doors and they all had a really good time.
“We saw lots of people from across the community and the bands and comedians all received a great response.”
Villagers got the chance to sample real ales sourced from Surrey brewers and the nation’s best beer makers, such as Waylands, Whiteheads, Triple FFF and Dark Star, as well as a selection of ciders, wines and lagers.
Live music flowed from Iccarus Knot and the Midnight Tokers. While headlining act, The High Barnets gave a somewhat sweaty performance from 9pm drawing in a large crowd of fans.
On Saturday evening, the laughs were provided by The Comedy Works, including Edinburgh Comedy Award nominee Ivan Brackenbury, Mock The Week’s, Seann Walsh and Edinburgh Fringe favourite Stephen Carlin.

THE HERSHAM Beer Festival will return for two days from Friday, July 8, and invites residents to enjoy a weekend of live music and entertainment, washed down by a wide range of real ales, lagers, wines, and ciders.
With several live bands, stand-up comedy, a hog roast, BBQ and pub quiz, it promises to be the highlight of any beer devotee’s calendar.
The fourth festival is being organised by 1st Hersham Scouts, at their headquarters in Burwood Road, Hersham, and proceeds will send more than 20 scouts on a trip to Switzerland this summer, where they’ll undertake hiking and mountain biking.
Live music will flow throughout the festival, with sets from popular bands The High Barnets, Midnight Tokers, Fast Fuse, Rock Jelly, rising Irish star Lorraine O’Reilly, and a live jazz performance.
On Saturday evening, the laughs will be provided by The Comedy Works, with three of the best comedians from the live circuit and TV. The line-up includes Comedy Rocks star Rob Deering, Patrick Monahan and Ian Cognito.
Organiser, Ed Grimsey, said: “Over the last three years more than 2,500 local residents have enjoyed a wonderful weekend of live music and entertainment, washed down by a wide range of summer tipples.
“The entertainment line-up is proving a real draw for groups of friends and families, with some excellent bands and TV comedians proving the ideal accompaniment to the food and drink on offer.”

The High Barnets
Pig’s Knackers, Nun’s Fist, Tinker’s Winkle. This isn’t a list of random insults, but just a few of the improbable names of fine real ales you may be able to find at the 2011 Hersham beer festival. The stereotypical image of real ale fans, supping the foam from a lukewarm, cloudy pint whilst discussing leather elbow patches and picking the remnants of yesterday’s pork pie from their beards is as outdated as my haircut as last year’s beerfest proved. Indeed, it was such a popular and merry affair that the promoters have decided to do it all again this year. And what an event it is shaping up to be.
